Facade Restoration / Facade Restoration
The facade restoration of this circa 1900 Victorian in the North Panhandle neighborhood of San Francisco involved the installation of plaster cartouches and rosettes. The application of gold leaf to these plaster ornaments, and to the original arched entryway, columns, and egg and dart mouldings helped to focus attention to the intricacies of the original detailing. / This early twentieth century commercial building had been neglected for more than 50 years, with a crumbling brick foundation, and with plywood siding covering the majority of the storefronts. By careful investigation, the street facade was restored to its original intent. Storefronts were reintroduced, each with large wood-framed display windows, recessed entry alcoved with traditional wood doors, and highlighted with divided lite transom windows spanning the entire width of each storefront. The result is a project which earned a 2008 Outstanding Restoration Building award from the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society.
